Carnival Draw

The Carnival parade took place on Saturday 12th September on a gloriously sunny day. This year was fortunately blessed by sunny weather all week.

The first event of the week was an extremely successful Race Night held at the Brewers Arms on Friday the 4th thanks to Duncan and Nicki.

On the Sunday Claire Davis organised the Fun Day which was our most successful ever. Thanks to the generosity of the Youth Parish Council the children of the village were able to enjoy an afternoon of free goes on various inflatable castles assault courses, etc. Graham Male had managed to again get a fine turnout of vintage and classic cars for all to enjoy.

The high point of the afternoon was the crowning of this year’s Carnival Queen, Liberty Batchelor and her princess Alexena Hart.

The afternoon was rounded off with a Tug-of-War organised by Andy Pearce the new Pavilion Chairman with the cricket club emerging as the eventual winners.

The weekend ended with a Carnival Quiz hosted by Duncan at the Brewers.

On Thursday night there was a very good turnout for the annual Carnival Grand Draw and Bingo session put on by George McCarthy and the Sports and Social Club. Thanks must also be given to the local business community for donating the prizes for the Draw.

On Friday the visit of a helicopter from RNAS Yeovilton unfortunately had to be cancelled due to operational commitments but the Children’s party in the Blake Hall went ahead as usual.

Carnival Saturday dawned bright and sunny, the Youth parish Council again showed their commitment to the Carnival by raising nearly £200 pounds manning the Mile of Coins. The Photographic Society also had a successful exhibition in the Blake Hall.

The day stayed sunny so that there were very large crowds lining the route of the parade in the evening. Due to restrictions on the route and some last minute cancellations the procession was smaller than usual but the standard of entries was as high as ever, much to the delight of the appreciative crowds. Thanks to our volunteer marshals and the Police the evening went off without incident and unlike some other Carnivals you showed your generosity by raising more than in previous years, nearly £1,400 pounds. Thanks must go to all the volunteer collectors especially the Ilminster Lions.  Photographs of the Carnival taken by members of the photographic Society can be viewed on this website

Once our accounts are reconciled we will be holding a presentation evening, open to all, where all the money you have helped to raise will be distributed amongst our local worthy causes.

Finally I would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Carnival possible.
